Tawang a small town is located north of Bombdila. The journey from Bombdila to Tawang offers the traveler some breathtaking mountainous terrain. Tawang is situated at an elevation of over 3,400 meters and is internationally known for its 400 year old Buddhist monastery. The origin of this monastery can be traced to the middle of 17th century. It is an important Buddhist center of north east India. It is the largest Buddhist Monastery in India, beautifully located on a spur surrounded by snowcapped mountains and is the tourist hotspot. Founded in 1645, this Gelugpa has 500 resident monks. It was also the birth place of the 6th Dalai Lama. There is a magnificent statue of Lord Buddha nearly 8 meter high. There is a library inside the courtyard. It also has an excellent collection thangkas and rare Buddhist manuscripts. The Monastery is situated at an altitude of nearly 3,050 meters above sea level. Sherdukpen, Monpa, Hruso (Aka), Sajalong (Miji), Bugun (Khowa) and Sartang are the main tribes of the district. The road is a scenic and passes through alpine forests with oak, pine and rhododendron trees.The inhabitants of the region are all of Monpa tribes except Shyo village which is dominated by people of Tibetan origin. The two major religious festivals of the Monpas are "Losar" and "Torgya".

The Sela Pass is the world's highest motorable high-altitude mountain pass located inTawang District of Arunachal Pradesh state of India. It has an elevation of 4170 m.connects the Buddhist city of Tawang Town toTezpur and Guwahati and is the main road connecting Tawang with the rest of India. Tawang is situated at a distance of 78 km from Sela Pass while Guwahati is at a distance of 340 km.The pass has hardly any vegetation and is usually snow covered to some extent all through the year.During winter temperature in the pass can go down to -10 degrees.
This place is snowed in most of the year and offers excellent and heavenly views all year round. This part of the Eastern Himalayan range is pretty special for the Buddhists as it is believed that about 101 lakes exist in and around Sela pass and each of these lakes has a huge religious significance for the Buddhist community.Very close to the Pass is the beautiful Sela Lake, which could be fully or partially frozen in winter.Some small rivers also flow out of the lake and during grazing season, yaks grazing around the lake.While Sela Pass does get heavy snow in winters, it is usually open throughout the year unless landslides or snow require the pass to be shut down temporarily. Sela Pass is the main route to access Tawang town, and given the proximity of Tawang District with Tibet.
